It started with a Canadian author who discovered that their copyrighted works were used to train various AI large language models (LLMs).
The datasets used to train the LLMs contained large amounts of copyrighted works, including books and articles by many Canadian authors. The plaintiff alleges that the defendants used and unlawfully copied and shared these copyrighted works, and did not license or otherwise obtain permission to do so from the copyright holders.

A class action is a lawsuit filed by one person who represents a group with common issues.
This allows a group with similar injuries, harms, or legal claims to pursue their case together, providing access to the legal system, saving court costs, and deterring corporate wrongdoing through a single, unified legal action.
